The Bodie 601 Band is an American bluegrass/americana band from Mammoth Lakes, California. Named after an 19th century old west slang term for a vigilance committee, the group considers itself “musical vigilantes” in that they have banded together to take the laws (of music) into their own hands in order to forge a sound that is theirs and theirs alone.
Featuring strong vocal harmonies, fiery fiddle solos and driving rhythm, this band is rapidly climbing the mountains of the music scene in the Eastern Sierra. Having played extensively throughout the home Mono and Inyo counties of the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains – including being the opening act for the famous Millpond Music Festival in 2015- the release of the band’s first album, Fortune’s Calling, has brought the band’s particular blend of music ( often called bluegrass-ish ) to a wider audience. Combining a mix of powerful original compositions penned by guitarist Cassie Burgenbauch and bassist Russ Reese with a sprinkling of cover tunes ranging from solid traditional numbers to eclectic reimagining of pop songs, the album has been met with popular acclaim and strong local buzz
Formed in 2013 when violinist Amy Callanan met percussionist Kristin Reese while both women were performing roles in the local musical theater (The Marvelous Wonderettes, to be precise), the band has undergone several personnel evolutions before settling onto its current 4-piece arrangement. With Russ Reese providing the foundation on bass and Cassie Burgenbauch laying down those strong chords on rhythm guitar the band has developed a sound that emphasizes the lush and beautiful 2,3 and sometimes 4 part harmonies that are at the core of this group’s superpower.
The goal of the band now is to bring the music to as many fans as possible while continuing to grow and develop a unique sound and explore the incredible talents that each member brings to the group. So saddle up, folks, the Bodie 601 has only just begun to ride!
